Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and is the second largest city in NC after Charlotte. Raleigh population estimates in January, 2010 were approximately 392,000 and we have been recognized as one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country. There’s a lot more to the area than just Raleigh, though. Durham and Chapel Hill are the other primary cities of the Research Triangle metropolitan region, although Cary has been getting more and more buzz as a major player in the area boasting well planned growth and close proximity to major work centers.
SURROUNDING TOWNS AND COUNTIES
There are three counties that make up the Raleigh metro area: Wake, Durham and Orange. Raleigh is located in Wake and Chapel Hill is in Orange County. The current population of Raleigh is estimated to be around 390,000.
Popular surrounding towns of Raleigh include Cary, Apex, Morrisville, Wake Forest, Garner, Holly Springs, Fuquay Varina, Willow Springs, Chapel Hill and Pittsboro. As the region has grown, many of these small towns has worked diligently to shape it’s own identity. The neat thing you will find is that you can enjoy a small town atmosphere and not feel like you are in Raleigh’s shadow.

ECONOMY
Raleigh, the capital city of NC, is considered a top place to live, work, and play by several national magazines and organizations.
Somewhere around 50,000+ people go to work in Research Triangle Park everyday. The Triangle, also known as RTP, gets it’s name from the traingle shape created by Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. RTP is approximately 7,000 acres and is known as one of the largest science parks in the world is is home to multinational corporations employing thousands as well as small start up companies with just 1 or 2 employees. Information and communications technology, biotechnology, life sciences and environmental sciences are the leading industries in the Triangle.
UNIVERSITIES
Major universities like NC State, Chapel Hill, Duke and NC Central play a significant role in Raleigh’s identity. Highly recognized programs like engineering, forestry, architecture, medical programs and law schools turn out highly sought after recruits and draw new businesses from around the world. There are also smaller schools that are an important part of our community including Shaw University, St. Augustines, Meredith College, Peace College and the South Eastern Baptist Seminary found in Wake Forest.

If you are a fan of college sports, then you’ll love being in the heart of ACC with the NC State Wolfpack, Duke Blue Devils and the Carolina Tarheels! Raleigh is also close enough to ECU and Wake Forest if you want to catch an out of town game.
If you are a pro-sports fan, Charlotte is a little more than 2 hours away and home to the NFL Carolina Panthers and NBA Charlotte Bobcats.
